Should the responsibility fall solely on the parents/guardians or, as is the case now, should the government regulate it?

Parents..... the world is at the point where there really is at the borderline of no censorship.... go onto the internet and you have any fucking thing you can think of at your finger tips.

Its at that point that the parent needs to learn what is out there and either censor it or actually talk to the kid about why that shit is censored.... my parents always told me the truth when I asked the growing up question.. Where do babies come from, the "Talk" etc

Its the parent/guardian's responsibility to raise the child correctly, not their government.

Parent's responsibility. Censorship by the government is one of my big... hatreds.

it is the job of the parent of guardian to raise and educate their children. Its simply an example of how lazy we have gotten as a culture when people clammer and complain in mass because of some band/rapper/musucians lyrics or concert show. Meanwhile their material is rated M FOR MATURE (gamestop esrb reference 8D) but OH HEY THATS NOT PROPER? hey...try...NOT getting your thirteen year old daughter a ticket to Nicki Minaj's concert next time. Or buying your 12 year old GTA IV.

I am with all of you but in the interest of debate I will be on the other side of this.

That's the thing though, parents cannot completely control everything their child receives. Let's say it's the child's B-day and the "cool" Uncle slips them a copy of an M rated game or CD that's not appropriate. What if they go over their friends house and they pull out an R rated movie to watch? A parent cannot monitor their child 100 percent of the time.

I'm just gonna answer this now over a year later haha

It's still the parents responsibility. Kid's are gonna be sneaky here and there. I know Iwas when I was younger. From the internet to the old days of forest porn, kids and teens have been getting into things that are mature in content for years.

But 99.9% of the time when they have a question about something, they will go to their parents. And in those moments that parent needs to educate the kid so they know about the content they have watched

Exactly, there's a difference between "educating" a child. And simply blaming it on someone else for "educating" them on somethign you didn't want them to hear. The problem is like lone said, kids are gunna be kids. As a parent you need to show that you WANT to know what their doing. When there's the threat of someone punishing you if your found out, you think twice. BUT when a parent goes and BUYS then the R-rated film, M rated game etc. and then is like..OMG WHY WOULD THEY MAKE THIS?! its like...are you kidding me? As a parent you need to understand that these things are out there. ALWAYS HAVE BEEN. there's ALWAYS been a shock culture media medium out there that will educate the young about things their too young for. Its the RESPONSIBILITY of the PARENT to in these situations be there to answer honestly and inform that you should stay away from them. And not SUPPLY these things. An informed attentive parent is a good parent.

Oooooh. I just realised I can contribute to this discussion in a way.

I have no kids myself, but being an uncle of 7, I still manage to spend a good bit of time with kids. One of my nieces likes to watch anime with me, even if its not English dub and she can't keep up with the subtitles she still enjoys it. She watched most of Shiki(subtitled), all of Angel Beats(English Dub) and, after seeing me reading it, liked to look at my Hellsing manga(especially the gory pages, kinda threw me off a bit). She probably just did these things to spend time with me and granted I may have over stepped my bounds being an uncle and showed her some things questionable. But in certain cases I knew when it wasn't a good idea. Like when she wanted to watch High School of the Dead. I told her "When you get older". lol

I guess I'm trying to say I'm an example of "what parents don't know is going on". Even when they think they're under proper supervision, everyone has a different idea of what kids can see and shouldn't see. I'm fine with a little excess violence or edgy comedy as long as the child understands that it's not real, but sexual themes is something they should learn about but the timing can be difficult. Point be as it may, I strongly believe that when a child wants to learn about the "Birds and the Bees" it should be the parents responsibility to make sure they understand. For instance, with the amount of threats out there, especially for young girls, it is essential they learn about these things not just so they understand, but so they can protect themselves from potential abuse they are unaware about until its too late. As for how this affects censorship in the TV/Movie/Game industry. If the rating is TV-13 and your kid is 6 years old and you don't feel they should be watching something like this, do something about it. You have no right to complain about something you are in control of and we as Americans should stop trying to blame others for the problems be it me, you, or the President. Let's all grow up a little.
